There are so many choices when it comes to alternative building.  Where do you begin.  Which type of Alternative building is best for you?  Will they keep you comfortable in your climate?  Now, there is another alternative building method that is gaining massive popularity: AirCrete.  For all the methods of building this one stands out above the others.  Why?  AirCrete known as the home made version of cellular cement or aerated cement is rapidly gaining attention.   Its forms an insulating building material by inflating Portland cement with air bubbles to a volume of 6 cubic feet!

When a house is made as an arch or dome you can build the entire structure including the roof & inner walls from AirCrete.  This has great appeal for not only simplicity, but because the primary ingredient in AirCrete is Portland Cement which is available world wide.  It will last generations and its carbon footprint can be canceled by growing 40 hybrid poplar trees on gray water.  This is if that matters to you.

The average american uses more energy and produces FAR more carbon in the air from driving to work every day and heating their home.  The cost of the house is only the start of the story.  The greater cost of many houses over their lifetimes is energy use.  Yes the cost of keeping it comfortable.  AirCrete can be made any thickness and insulating value.  Suitable for everything from passive housing to energy efficient actively climate controlled housing that is responsible using appropriate technology.  A geo-source heat-pump, for example, can heat and cool your AirCrete House to any temperature you choose for the same amount of energy used by forced air ground tubs; which give you an average 3 month ground temperature that gets a little too hot at the end of summer and too cold by the end of winter. One leaves you at the mercy of the weathers average and the other you choose your comfort level at all times. This energy is easily produced by solar and wind power.

AirCrete: The new Alternative Rapid Building System

AirCrete has actually be around since at-least the 70's.  After the California Wild Fires and the Flooding in the North East AirCrete is Gaining popularity for good reason as its resistant to both these problems in addition to being non-Toxic & Fast to build with.  The commercial version, AAC, is actively used world wide already.

I would Love to Hear From You!  Tell Me.. Why You Might you Build With AirCrete?

Broke to  Living the Dream, and back to broke. My Story: How I Discovered a Free, Peaceful, Abundant Lifestyle and the "best" alternative house building method "out there"

Let me tell you a story..  My story..  About how I started at conventional life and landed in a paid for AirCrete house.

I was raised in typical dependent government school.  Taught to get a job, work hard, start a retirement plan and then when I'm old I can "retire" and do what I want to do with enough money to live the "dream."  I wish I knew then that anything is possible. I worked in the family business through high school and off an on every year then finally got the plush little corporate job on a salary.

I worked hard-and-long only to loose it all - During the "Great Recession" the company I worked for escorted me out the front door like a stranger and informed me they were firing me along with 60% of the other employees and my belongings would be mailed to me.  You see in-spite working 36 hours days, improving their business and never telling them no when they called: at the end of the day they didn't care about me.  The companies primary client was bought out and our jobs out-sourced without notice.  It felt horrible.  That heavy hopeless feeling as I thought about the bills and taking care of my family sank in hard as I discovered the economy at the time was not going to have anything to offer.  Construction had come to a grinding halt.

The old way of working for a company all ones life no longer applied.  The world just is not what I was promised it would be in school.  Its a new age.  It was time to grow up..

I cashed out my retirement fund to kick the bucket a little further down the road.  As the money ran out I took the last bit and paid off one car, let the other go back, sold the time shares, bought some land, and built a tiny frame house before tiny-houses were a "thing."

One good thing did come from the corporate job though.  Hours of surfing YouTube and dreaming about homesteading in the wild.  I learned a lot and had begun to practice many of the things I was learning.  With no job and no money I learned to live 80% off grid, grew my food, and took odd jobs to buy the rest of what we needed.  Eventually we lived 1 year with no power, no bills, no time commitments, and loads of super fresh food.  I actually felt amazing and all that fear of the unknown gave way to an inner stillness and a knowing that we were going to be fine no-matter-what. I experienced something special;  Something lost to the modern world..

I ran into an old family friend and started helping him with his construction business.  Building houses and eventually got the opportunity to build a straw bale alternative house.  I was hooked!  I started learning everything I could get my hands on to read about alternative building.  I started taking workshops for anything I could attend.  Over the next few years I had the opportunity to build or participate in building thatch, rammed earth, earth ship, clay-slip straw, cob, and earth bag houses.  At one time or another I was able to live for a few months in each of these buildings as well.

Then I was invited to Mexico to build with AirCrete.   The dome people did not teach well nor understand basics of a compressive structure, but I got the "gist" of AirCrete.

I returned home and built a small studio for an artist.  Weather left straw prices to high and mostly unavailable.  Not to mention the straw mold or pesticides were killing sinuses and I hated working with it!  So I built the cute little studio using AirCrete and got to live in it for a year while they left the country to get a second citizenship. I was sold!  This was by far the most comfortable of all the structures next to straw bale.  It was fast to build, easy to heat and cool as well as fast cheap & beautiful.

The people who attended the mexico dome workshop started asking questions on our forum.  It seems they did not understand enough to feel confident in building their own structure.  I started helping and teaching my friends.  This lead to private workshops and eventually the idea of sharing this great experience with everyone.   Now, I teach Alternative Building Schools twice a year and have meet many amazing people.

After building a number of these AirCrete Domes I noticed that people never seemed to finish building them.  They doubted their ability to install electric, plumbing, and air conditioning.  All things I had been doing for 30 years.  This is why I started the Terlingua School of Alternative Building.  To give people an affordable and an effective way to learn all the skills necessary to build their own house with all the systems that make a house a comfortable and livable home.

The Story Continues.. From wilderness to living inside an 201 SqFt AirCrete Tiny House

Terlingua was a very remote location 76 miles from what you can loosely call a "town" and no utilities are even possible out there in the harsh Chihuahuan desert.  This location was perfect for testing AirCrete in an extreme climate. It was like being a pioneer in the wilderness.  Every thing you required for life, survival, and comfort had to be carefully planned for and hauled in.  Every step was completely my responsibility.   It was a great experience of personal growth.

I landed at Terlingua in a tent only to discover the unrelenting uncomfortable wind was not only to hot or to cold, but also to noisy in morning & evening as it deposited fine bentonite dust into everything I owned.  I had dust in places I normally don't think about.  The extreme silence & solitude tested my mind to the max before discovering something beautiful and profound in my self and the desert.

I upgraded to living inside a much more comfortable foiled-lined foam board "hexa-yurt."  Water was the next step forward.  For water we had an old windmill well on the property, but the water had magnesium salts in it and there was no aquifer in the area.  So for drinking water & to build with cement, rain water was to be THE source of life for our bodies and AirCrete Building.

With a 32 foot by 32 foot roof complete and a tank in place just in-time for the rains we had 2600 gallons of water with the yearly capacity to catch as much as 7600 gallons of fresh tasty crisp cool water.   I must admit the shade provided by this roof was a huge relief to my skin from the scorching summer sun as well!  Now we had a place to hold classes and were ready to build the 16 foot diameter 201 Square Foot AirCrete Tiny House/cabin!

With The AirCrete Cabin Nearing Completion I moved in just in-time as a winter storm came in bringing sideways blowing cold rain and ice that would make the most rugged mountain man tremble.  The wind blew hard, the storm raged, and the thunder rumbled across the hills as the lightening split rocks .  Inside the AirCrete I was snug, safe, and sound, living in complete comfort even though I was in shorts & did not have the solar power to run the heat pump.  I was reminded just how much I love AirCrete & How empowering and amazing the feeling of living inside something built with my own two hands is.  By now I was convinced that my future homes will always be AirCrete.  Nothing and I MEAN NOTING beats that feeling of absolute abundance & safety!

What Elements Make the Perfect Off-Grid House?

Comfort is THE reason we build homes.  Otherwise we would just live outside.  The type of alternative building you choose should meet your goals and protect you from the elements. Generally there are two primary goals when choosing a building style.  Passive & Actively controlled temperature.

Passive structures use thermal mass wrapped in insulation and solar gain to collect heat and holder it long enough to stay comfortable in winter and release heat over night to store cool for summer days. The more extreme the environment the more careful you must design your structures heat loss & gain.  Also the less likely you will remain comfortable all winter or all summer.  Fully passive only works in the correct climate and most of us don't live there.

Any type of building that does not provide good insulation is NOT acceptable in climates with hot summers or cold winters.  Modern earth-ships that actually work contain a large thermal mass of dirt behind the tires and wrapped in thick envelope of foam board insulation.  Even then outside a climate with a comfortable daily nightly average temperature they can become less than ideal for many people.  Structures that provide no real insulation include cob, rammed earth, earth bag and the like.

Active Structures may or may not use thermal mass, but do benefit from some thermal mass and hybrid structures are ideal. Good Insulation is key to minimizing energy consumption in active structures.  These structures consume some energy and appropriate technology to move heat into or out of the structure.

The primary advantage to active structures is the ability to hold your chosen comfort temperature year around without being at the mercy of the elements.  This is my favorite structure type.  Most first world people would agree.   Straw bale does a good job on insulation but moldy pesticide dust is hard on me and straw is not instantly available or cheap after delivery.

Keep it simple. Building skills required should be easy to learn & teach to hired help.

Common off-the-shelf easy to obtain  materials that are appropriate in terms of purpose, efficiency, and cost of time.  Money requires time. Digging earth cost time. So free dirt is not always cheaper!

Reasonably Rapid to Build.  Even for one person.

Tornado Proof Round Structures, Pest Proof, Flood rot-Proof, Fire Proof, Sound Resistant, Comfortable in Any ClimateAffordable,  Expandable,Energy Efficient, Non-toxic

By now you are aware of the value in choosing the right Alternative Building Materials & Methods.  Now that I have chosen a material, What now?

Planning, Architect, floor plans, electric plans, plumbing plans, getting clear on what you want. This is key.   Make a plan and stick to it without change.  Get it right the first time and don't miss details.   You do not need a degree to make good floor plans and draw out 3D rendered guides.

Getting Land: Find your region to live in, search for property, negotiate a good price, ensure you have clear title and physical deeded access to your land, buy a title policy to protect your investment, get a survey.  There is plenty of cheap land.  Getting closer to the city raises the price and you have to get permission from your go(d)vernment  to live & build; alternative building not welcome in most cases.  Will you have to drive to work every day?  What might it look like if you leave it all behind?  What are your priorities for the whole of your life in order of importance?  Consider this carefully and don't let fear or doubt stop you from getting your highest priority.  Perhaps you can life a free life two hours drive away and this freedom gives you time & money to drive in and enjoy the "big apple culture" even more than living in "town" working all the time to pay rent or buy expensive land.

Logistics, There is a lot that goes into building your own house.  You have to account for every nail, screw, and material that needs to be purchased, delivered, and constructed in the correct order, the ground on site must be properly prepared, and all the systems that make a house livable have to installed and it all has to be assembled and working to make the house a comfortable home.

Skilled Labor to install Systems like Solar, Electric, Lighting, Plumbing, Air Conditioning, Internet often equal or exceed the cost of materials.  You can save a lot by learning these skills your self.  No matter what you have been told or believe: these skills are not hard to do and with the right knowledge anyone can do it.

Time is another factor. Will you be building this on weekends or all at once in a month.  Will you be working a job or just stepping out of the matrix all at once?  Are you retiring to the rest of your life and able to take your time?

Labor: Will you do all the labor or hire help?  Are you ready to train unskilled labor?  No matter how knowledgeable and reputable the company at the end of your project it will have been assembled by cheap unskilled and often unthinking labor.  You can hire these people directly yourself and over see the work as you instruct them.  You should know: how to choose people to hire, when to fire them, how to spot a rotten apple, and how to direct a team to get the job done while keeping an eye on the final goal.

Money: Will you build as you can afford the materials.  Do you have cash in hand?  Do you prefer instant gratification and a turn key product on a bank loan?   Even a person on minimum wage can buy cheap land and build a starter tiny house in a year.  I know a man who build a studio in an acquaintance back yard in exchange for living in it for 1 year while he saved and bought property & materials.  You can also hire companies to do everything for you.  What if you could make your money online without a job?  If you want it there is nothing that can stop you except a broken focus and lack of commitment.

You will be ready for all this.  Get good information and believe in your self. You can do this! I found the solution to all these steps as part of my job and life experience.  Really it just requires commitment and stepping into doing it.  Take it one small step or bite at a time and you will improve and understand everything as you go.  Having good council can also help you on this path.  Find someone you can reach out to and ask questions when you are stuck or uncertain.  Many many times this has got me out of a jam.  I once worked on a hundred-thousand CNC plasma cutter.  The owner was asked to help him out of a bind.   Computers, plasma, voltages, stepper motors, sensors.  It was over whelming.  Reaching out to an engineer friend and taking in one piece at a time, in order, I was able to fix that machine that I thought was way over my head.  In the end it was not hard to do.  You might be asking how do I find the right "friend" for all of this?  We will get to that soon.

I'm not saying its easy.  This process will stretch you and will grow you.  It will reach points where it seems overwhelming: with no end in site.  However, with connections to people supporting you and continual small actions to keep moving forward you WILL have built your own house.  Not just a house, but a HOME!

Now, is the time to Build:  Climate change, Economic change, Life Change, Desire for change

Climate: Co2, or natural cycle into the Grand Solar Minimum. The reason doesn't matter.  The effects are already hitting us.  Life is change and the earth has always had climate change over hundreds of years.  Its nothing new.  We have the records from the ice core samples and volcanic ash and dust in the ice to measure gas content and determine high and low temperatures for thousands of years.  We can be sure of one thing: Change.

David DuByne of adapt 2030 has done a great job of documenting grand solar minimum changes coming.  Its a reset button for empires that gets hit every 400 years.  "Zharkova…used a new model of the sun’s solar cycle, which is the periodic change in solar radiation, sunspots and other solar activity over a span of 11 years, to predict that “solar activity will fall by 60 percent during the 2030s to conditions last seen during the ‘mini ice age’ that began in 1645…"

Basically, without sun flares to charge our magnetosphere more cosmic radiation hits earth and jet streams misbehave and weather changes dramatically.  During the mini-ice age food production fell due to shorter growing seasons and plant disease,  This led to malnutrition & the plague that killed half the worlds population..

If you want to learn more I suggest you use duck duck go for your searches.  This information is being limited by google and media outlets of the beast.  Massive food crop loss has been occurring word wide.  You will be seeing change soon.  The SARS virus weather real or staged has shut down chinese ports and the disruption to world wide shipping will effect changes in availability of foods.

Economic Change: Depending on how aware you are: you probably already know how fragile the economy is right now.  China port shutdowns if opened now would takes months to recover from the massive shipping shutdowns.  This will effect every nation as product will be in shorter supply.  Amazon FBA my not have product to sell.  This affects not only convenience but also the personal economy of may people.  Almost everything in the US is made in china.

World banks are transitioning us all to new digital currency with a single world bank capable or raising trillions as every transaction collects a fee.  The US dollar can be bypassed through the banks which means loosing the petro-dollar which has lifted out prosperity until now.  Raising private corporate military and contract control of the corporation nations is progressing now; its a merger.  This could lead to a new global age of prosperity, but the transition may be quite rough.  Think great depression and dust bowel as we transitioned to a new financial system away from gold and had a snap change in weather.

Weather times get tough or not.  How resilient is your lifestyle? Where would you be with even a 3 month interruption to money flow or goods?  Do you rent or own a mortgage ("Word nerds will notice an eerie root word in 'mortgage' — 'mort,' or 'death,'" Weller writes. "The term comes from Old French, and Latin before that, to literally mean 'death pledge.'" )

Good News: In any economic times its possible to build your own house with the correct attitude and knowledge.  Weather now while normal exist or not. There is never a better time to start than NOW and with what is at hand.

Life Changes:  By now you are probably aware that you want to make changes in your life.  Even if that's just a new off-grid house or tiny house.  Odds are that you would not be reading this if you were content with everything "as-is".  Personal change is one thing we do have control of.  I encourage you to grow and change.  Take advantage of opportunities. If you are generally a negative or unlucky person then seek out personal growth, step outside your comfort zone and learn how to locate and change the automatic programs in your life we call beliefs.  If we don't change on the inside then things outside will generally not change for long.  A lottery winner for example typically is broke and back where they started in a few short years.  Even with massive successful changes on the outside their inner state always returns them to their comfort zone and back to a place withing their beliefs programs.

I believe in you!  Because you are reading this, You have within you the ability to make the changes in your life that you are already seeking!

What People Are Saying

I can afford to hire builders and have any type of house I want.  I choose AirCrete.  ”

I am a Doctor so, I can afford to hire builders and have any type of house I want.  I choose aircrete because its what I want.  I will move to a location where I can build my house without permission.  I choose to have build round healthy, or non-toxic, house something I can build with my own hands"

I feel very confident that I can make quality AirCrete by replicating what I was shown here.  I am very pleased"

I came out to do the AirCrete workshop with Mr Daniel. I stumbled across this on YouTube. It very much appealed to the self reliance. Having met him it has only reinforced that. He is a wizard when comes to construction and he's got a heart of gold.

It was fun to me. We experimented with the mixing process and found out its probably best to not over whip it because it takes more time and its probably more dense than you are aiming for. There is a window in AirCrete. Its fairly forgiving material. Had a great time playing around with it. The unplanned lessons were good. We adjusted and fixed problems and moved on. Even with excessive handling of a batch of AirCrete it was quite resilient. I had a nice feel on my bear feet. A little spongy. I feel very confident that I can now make quality AirCrete by replicating what I was shown here. Also, I know that I can contact Mr Daniel and he will help me through a tough spot. I am very pleased with the workshop.

If you are considering doing this your future self will thank you. It was very well worth my time money & energy I put into this. I feel very confident I will have an AirCrete cabin"

Knowing something, but doing something are two different things. I really learned a lot. This was the most comprehensive course out there...."

I'm In the middle of a life changing event and I want to live within my means. I want to escape the oppressive State I live in. So I though of different ways to get off grid. AirCrete seems to be the most reasonable amount of work vs the amount of reward you get. AirCrete is not as easy as I thought, but its not difficult. Doing by your self is possible, but having two hands would make the work must more reasonable. Once I can leave California I plan to move to a freedom loving state to buy some land and be the first student to complete his AirCrete house. Knowing something, but doing something are two different things.  This was the most comprehensive course out there. Doing everything in one: electric, plumbing, solar, and everything. It was a great value for the money. For anyone listening. If & when you come to one of these workshops.. Its a learning working experience. You NEED to be ready to get your hands dirty. Get in the middle of the mix. If you feel like you are being left out give a polite elbow, jump in a get involved."

Its been amazing. We have learned so much. We cant wait to start our project and you should do it to.  I come from zero structural background. I got to use saws, tools, cut angles. This was great and his is defiantly doable; to make the AirCrete. If you get involved there is plenty of hand on opportunity."

You can get it almost instantly"

It's a cheaper building material that is easy to work with.  Once you start doing it.  Its super easy.  You can get it almost instantly.  It's far less expensive than a conventional structure.  Once I get a piece of land I can live on the land and live debt free.  That's what I love about it.  The thing to understand about debt is that it stays with you for so long.  The thought about being in debt for so long kind of freaks me out! "

Common Objections

Some people think the cost of the course is high.  Investing in your self as you set out on a new experience is well worth it.  Your are worth it!  Alternative education for Alternative Building.  If you had to attend traditional courses on this wide variety of topics the cost could easily be more than 10 X cost.  The cost of a single class at your local community collage would be more than this course without factoring in the cost of driving and the hours upon hours of class time learning from someone who likely never successfully did any such work.  You save time watching only relevant content to the project you will build.  Time is money.  This course covers everything.  Save thousands of dollars by not hiring "skilled" labor to install the systems that make a house livable: Skilled labor is equal to the cost of the materials for the entire house.  The cost of attending an out of country AirCrete course taught by very young people who have never built real homes will cost you $1200 plus $300 or more for Airplane tickets, and at-least another $300 in food and lodging.  For the price of 70 cups of starbunk coffee you can learn something with the power to change your life.   Its not for everyone. If you can't afford that then how will you afford a house or the mistakes you may make?

Can I get a permit to build with AirCrete? Generally, NOT if you live in a city or other zone where you must get permission from go[d]vernment.  You must be a responsible private human who can stand in court without lawyers to force them to accept building without permits.  However, most of the country has freedom.  You can build without a permit in the country.  You can also purchase code approved AAC blocks and build a permitted house and still save thousands.  The BIG savings is in the building of your own house without a loan.  ALL of the skills you learn in this course apply to ALL types of building.

What if I don't like round houses?  I want something normal. The methods and skills are applicable for any shape of house.  We includes information of building rectangle walls.  Its even possible to make rectangle molds with lap siding which, when cast and painted, looks just like a lap siding house.  Put a normal roof on and no one would ever know the difference. Build Domes, Cylinders, Arches, Rectangle. This course focuses on a storm proof round house, but the shape of your house is up to you.

The AirCrete house in the video is ugly it looks like a Yurt.  You can make any shape, any size, and use any style of finish-work you wish.  The principles are the same.  Its entirely up to you.  This is just the teaching project that was filmed.

Advantages vs Disadvantages

What are the disadvantage compared to the advantages of building with AirCrete?  These are the highlights.  There is NO disadvantage to learning skills included in this course because they apply to ALL types of building.
